Overview

A PEDAL THROUGH VIETNAM'S SPIRITUAL HEART

Journey back in time with our Cycle Tour Hanoi Thay Tay Phuong Pagoda 1 Day, a profound exploration of Vietnam’s artistic and spiritual foundations. Located about 30-40 kilometers west of Hanoi’s center, the districts of Quoc Oai and Thach That are home to two of the most significant Buddhist landmarks in the country. This tour is designed for those who seek a perfect blend of physical challenge, scenic beauty, and deep cultural immersion.

As we leave the urban skyline behind, our cycling route opens up into the authentic "Doai" region—a land of limestone mountains rising from emerald rice paddies. Our first major stop is Thay Pagoda (Master's Pagoda), nestled at the foot of Sai Son Mountain. This 11th-century sanctuary is dedicated to Tu Dao Hanh, the founder of Vietnamese water puppetry. The pagoda is famous for its serene lake and the ancient covered bridges that look like dragon scales reflecting in the water.

The journey continues as we pedal through peaceful hamlets to Tay Phuong Pagoda, situated atop a hill shaped like a buffalo. To reach the top, you will walk up 239 laterite steps, but the reward is unparalleled: a collection of 18 Arhat statues (La Han), carved from jackfruit wood in the 18th century. These statues are considered masterpieces of Vietnamese sculpture, each expressing a different human emotion through vivid, lifelike expressions. This cycling odyssey is more than a trip; it is a pilgrimage through the architectural and sculptural history of Northern Vietnam, all experienced from the saddle of a bike.

Highlights

  • Thay Pagoda (Chua Thay): Admire the unique architecture of this 11th-century complex. Explore the Thien Phuc lake, the ancient stone bridges (Nhat Tien and Nguyet Tien), and learn about the origins of water puppetry on the very stage where it was born.

  • Tay Phuong Pagoda (Chua Tay Phuong): Marvel at the "Museum of Buddhist Statues." Witness the incredible detail of the 18 Arhat statues and the sophisticated three-layered roof structure made of terracotta tiles.

  • Limestone Karst Landscapes: Cycle through a region often called "Halong Bay on land" in the outskirts of Hanoi. The dramatic limestone outcrops provide a stunning backdrop for your photography.

  • Authentic Village Life: Navigate through narrow brick-paved lanes of ancient villages. See traditional communal houses (Dinh Lang) and watch local life unfold in front of courtyards filled with drying corn and rice.

  • Laterite Architecture: Discover the unique use of laterite (red clay stone) in local construction, from village walls to the steps leading up to Tay Phuong Pagoda.

  • Mountainous Cycling Path: Enjoy a mix of flat countryside roads and gentle uphill sections near the Thay and Tay Phuong mountains, providing a satisfying workout for cyclists.

  • Expert Narrative: Our guides are experts in Vietnamese history and Buddhism, providing you with deep insights into the symbolism and legends associated with each site.
