Overview

A Coast-to-Coast Odyssey: From Ancient Temples to Tropical Paradise

Discover the distinct soul of two Indian states on this comprehensive 16-Day South India Cycling Tour. This journey is a study in contrasts, taking you from the vibrant, temple-dotted plains of Tamil Nadu on the Bay of Bengal to the lush, tropical backwaters of Kerala on the Arabian Sea. It is arguably the most diverse cycling route in the subcontinent, offering a seamless blend of deep-rooted history, architectural marvels, and breathtaking natural beauty.

Your expedition begins in Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram), a UNESCO World Heritage site famous for its ancient rock-cut shore temples. As you pedal down the East Coast Road, the salty breeze accompanies you to Pondicherry, a charming slice of France in India, where colonial villas and bougainvillea-lined streets await. The route then dives deep into the Dravidian heartland, visiting the Great Living Chola Temples in Thanjavur and the opulent mansions of the merchant princes in Chettinad—a region also renowned for its fiery and flavorful cuisine.

Leaving the plains behind, the landscape dramatically transforms as we approach Madurai, one of the world's oldest inhabited cities, dominated by the colossal Meenakshi Amman Temple. From here, the real physical challenge begins: the ascent into the Western Ghats. You will cycle through forests, spice plantations, and eventually emerge into the cool, misty air of Munnar, surrounded by endless carpets of manicured tea gardens.

The final leg of the journey rewards your climbing efforts with a descent into God’s Own Country, Kerala. You will trade your saddle for a relaxing cruise on a traditional Houseboat in the Alleppey Backwaters, drifting through a labyrinth of canals. The tour concludes in the historic port city of Fort Kochi.

Throughout these 16 days, you will witness the changing languages, cuisines, and landscapes that make South India so unique. With expert guides, full support vehicles, and stays in heritage hotels ranging from 19th-century mansions to colonial bungalows, this tour is the ultimate way to experience the magic of the South.

Tour Plan

Expand All

You arrive in Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu. Our driver or team leader meets you at the airport and drives you away from the hustle and bustle of Chennai to the historic town of Mahabalipuram.

Located on a strip of land about 56 km (a one-and-a-half hour drive) south of Chennai, Mahabalipuram is renowned for a number of religious monuments dating back to the 7th and 8th centuries. Due to its location and topography, this town has been an important centre of sea trade for millennia.

Its location and topography have made it a significant hub for maritime trade for centuries. Our first day in Mahabalipuram is a day of leisure and rejuvenation as we relax at a comfortable hotel. You'll be introduced to the biking team and have the opportunity to meet other cyclists in the group. If you choose, you can take a short ride around the town to try out your bicycle. Our dinner and accommodations will be at the hotel or we may go out for dinner in city restaurant.
