Overview
UNLEASH YOUR ADVENTURE ON THE UNTAMED SIDE OF THE MEKONG
For those who believe that the best views are found at the end of a dusty, narrow trail, our Luang Prabang Single Dirt Track Explorer is the ultimate answer. While the UNESCO town of Luang Prabang exudes a quiet, golden charm, the "Right Bank" of the Mekong—the Chomphet District—remains a rugged frontier waiting to be conquered on two wheels. This one-day high-octane expedition is specifically designed for mountain bike enthusiasts who crave technical challenges, single-track thrills, and a raw connection with the Laotian wilderness.
This isn't your average sightseeing tour. We trade paved roads for winding dirt paths, steep ridgelines, and narrow tracks that slice through teak plantations and dense tropical forests. The journey begins with a symbolic crossing of the mighty Mekong, instantly transporting you from urban elegance to rural intensity. As you navigate the technical terrain, you will discover a side of Laos that remains invisible to the casual traveler: ancient, vine-covered stupas hidden in the woods, remote villages where the arrival of a cyclist is still a novelty, and panoramic vistas of the Mekong valley that will take your breath away. Whether you are maneuvering through the mud of the wet season or the loose gravel of the dry season, every kilometer on this single-track circuit demands focus and rewards you with pure adrenaline. Join us to explore the hidden heart of Chomphet and see why Luang Prabang is becoming a premier destination for serious mountain bikers.

Road Condition: Primarily off-road. Expect single-track dirt paths, gravel ridges, rocky descents, and narrow forest trails. This route includes technical sections and moderate to steep elevations.
Explore Chomphet District Across the Mekong
Our day kicks off with a short transfer to the Mekong riverbank. After ensuring your mountain bike is perfectly tuned to your preference, we board a local ferry. This short trip across the river acts as a gateway to a different world. Once on the Chomphet side, we bypass the main village roads and head straight for the hills.
The first part of our ride takes us past the historic Wat Long Khoun, where we briefly stop to admire the murals before the real challenge begins. We quickly move onto the single-track trails that the district is famous for among local riders. You will feel the adrenaline surge as the path narrows, winding through dense foliage and up onto the ridges that overlook the Mekong. The terrain here is varied—one moment you’re navigating a technical uphill through a teak forest, the next you’re flying down a dusty descent towards a hidden stream.
Mid-day, we pause for a Lao-style lunch, fueling up with local energy for the afternoon push. We then head towards Ban Chan, the pottery village. This section of the trail offers some of the most technical riding of the day, with loose surfaces and sharp turns that will test your handling skills.
In Ban Chan, we take a well-deserved breather to watch the local craftsmen at work, a tradition that has remained unchanged for generations. The final leg of our journey follows the riverbank back to the ferry point, giving you one last look at the beautiful, untamed landscape of Chomphet before we cross back into the comforts of Luang Prabang.
Golden Cycling Tours took care of every detail so I could focus on enjoying the ride. The countryside trails, riverside routes, and historic sites made for an unforgettable trip. A five-star cycling experience!
