Overview

A TIMELESS PEDAL THROUGH THE MUSEUM OF LATERITE

Step back in time and experience the authentic rhythm of Vietnamese rural life with our Hanoi Cycling Trip Duong Lam Ancient Village 1 Day. Located about 50 kilometers west of the capital, Duong Lam is not just a destination; it is a living history book. Known as the first village in Vietnam to be recognized as a national historic-cultural relic, this "Museum of Laterite" offers an unparalleled glimpse into the soul of the Northern Delta’s feudal past.

Our journey begins with a scenic drive to the outskirts, where we mount our professional hybrid bikes and begin our immersion into the countryside. As you pedal through the iconic Mong Phu Village Gate, you’ll feel the centuries-old atmosphere immediately. Duong Lam is world-renowned for its unique architecture—houses, walls, and wells all meticulously crafted from local red laterite stone (clay stone). These weathered, moss-covered walls tell stories of a time when the village was a bustling center of trade and culture.

This tour is designed for travelers who crave more than just sightseeing. We navigate the maze of narrow, brick-paved alleys that lead to 400-year-old private residences, where you can sip tea with local families and hear about their ancestral heritage. We also pay homage to the "Land of Two Kings"—King Phung Hung and King Ngo Quyen—who were both born here and led legendary movements for national independence. From the golden rice fields surrounding the village to the spiritual serenity of the communal houses, this cycling trip is a profound encounter with the heartbeat of Vietnam’s heritage.

Highlights

  • Iconic Village Gate (Cổng Làng Mông Phụ): Start your exploration at the only remaining ancient village gate in Northern Vietnam, featuring a classic roof and curved architecture that symbolizes the village's prosperity.

  • 400-Year-Old Ancient Houses: Step inside well-preserved residences made of laterite and ironwood. Learn about the "Five-Room" architecture and the traditional interior layout that has been maintained for generations.

  • Mong Phu Communal House: Marvel at the centerpiece of the village, a masterpiece of wood carving and architectural balance, which serves as the spiritual and social gathering place for the community.

  • The Land of Two Kings: Visit the historic temples dedicated to King Phung Hung and King Ngo Quyen. Hear the fascinating legends of how this small village produced two of Vietnam's most revered national heroes.

  • Unique Laterite Architecture: Discover why Duong Lam is called the "Laterite Village." See how the local red clay stone has been used to build everything from houses and fences to deep communal wells.

  • Scenic Field Cycling: Enjoy a liberating ride through the outskirts of the village, passing by lush rice paddies, lotus ponds, and local farmers tending to their seasonal crops.

  • Traditional Culinary Experience: Savor a home-cooked lunch in an ancient house. Taste regional specialties like "Thịt quay đòn" (roasted pork with bamboo), local herbs, and "Chè Lam" (traditional ginger sticky rice cake).

  • Local Craft Interaction: Visit a family workshop to see how traditional soy sauce (Tương Đường Lâm) is fermented in large ceramic jars, a craft that has been passed down for centuries.

Expand All

You will be greeted by your Golden Cycling Tours guide and driver at your hotel in Hanoi, ready to embark on an exciting adventure. Our first destination is Duong Lam village, a charming agricultural village in the Northern Red River delta known for its well-preserved centuries-old houses.

After approximately two hours of travel, we will arrive at Duong Lam village and begin our exploration by visiting Mong Phu temple. This unique hamlet is the only one that still retains its original village entrance gate, offering a glimpse into the village’s rich history.

As we stroll along the ancient alleys, you’ll have the opportunity to engage in conversations with the friendly locals who call these historic houses their home. To add to the authenticity of the experience, we will enjoy a delicious lunch in one of these ancient houses.

After lunch, we’ll hop on our bicycles and embark on a leisurely tour to visit two significant temples: Ngo Quyen and Phu Hung. Our first stop is the Mia Pagoda, located in another hamlet within Duong Lam village. This beautifully constructed pagoda dates back to the 15th century and houses an impressive collection of 287 statues of varying sizes.

Take your time to explore the intricate details of the pagoda before we continue our cycling journey to Ngo Quyen and Phung Hung temples. These sacred sites pay tribute to two legendary Vietnamese kings, Phung Hung (761-802) and Ngo Quyen (896-944), both born in Duong Lam. These heroic leaders played pivotal roles in Vietnam’s history, leading successful resistance wars against northern invasions. The temples stand as enduring symbols of their courage and leadership.

As our cycling adventure draws to a close, we’ll cycle back to Duong Lam village, where our vehicle will be waiting to take us back to Hanoi. Around 17:00, we will arrive back in Hanoi and drop you off at your hotel, marking the completion of your unforgettable Hanoi Cycling Trip Duong Lam Ancient Village 1 Day.
